Taxes for the Arts

Orange, a town in Provence, France, hosts prestigious annual opera festival, the Chorégies d’Orange (http://bit.ly/bSOq06), in its 2000 year old Roman amphitheater. The French word “chorégies” derives from the ancient Greek word for the tax the Greeks imposed on the wealthy to support the arts. I suppose such a tax, even a tiny one, is too much to ask for in double-dip recession America. But, to quote Shakespeare, “perchance to dream…”
