Mandatory Reporter Legislation Will Not Go Forward

Last month we blogged about a California Assembly bill that would make many volunteers “mandatory reporters,” meaning they would be required to report  to the police any conduct they believe constituted sexual abuse against a minor. No one questions the need to protect minors, but most in the nonprofit community think the bill overreached. Today we learned directly from Assemblyman Lara’s office that he has “decided to not move forward with the bill as currently written and to not have it be heard.”

Assemblyman Lara, the bill’s author, may rewrite the bill. If he does, we will get the news from his office and will keep our readers updated.
